OPENS 2 NOVEMBER

What's new for 2027?

The 2027 categories are now grouped by theme, making it easier to find the award that best fits your work. This year also brings several updates:

  • A new Best Collections and Collecting Project category.
  • One global Digital Experience award, replacing the separate UK and International digital categories.
  • Three awards are open to non-UK entries: Digital Experience, International Exhibition of the Year and Museums + Heritage Business of the Year.
  • Refreshed category names and updated criteria across the programme.

Read more below to explore the criteria for each category.

The M+H Exhibition Awards categories

The M+H Exhibition Award categories recognise the very best in exhibition-making across permanent, temporary, touring and international projects. These flagship awards celebrate exhibitions that combine creative ambition with excellent design, interpretation and storytelling, delivering lasting value for audiences, organisations and communities.

UK Exhibition of the Year

UK Exhibition of the Year celebrates the creation of new museums and galleries, major redevelopments and outstanding new permanent exhibitions.

The judges will be looking for excellence and innovation in the visitor experience, design, interpretation and storytelling, delivered successfully within the project brief and budget.

Entries should explain the thinking behind the project and demonstrate how audience insight, community participation or consultation helped to shape the finished exhibition. The judges will be looking for an experience in which design, collections, content and interpretation work together to engage, inform and inspire visitors.

Particular attention should be given to the impact of the project on the museum, gallery or heritage attraction, its visitors and its wider community of stakeholders. Please provide evidence of outcomes.

Full consideration will be given to the budget in relation to the size and scope of the project. Please include clear information about the project’s total delivery budget and total actual expenditure. All financial information will be treated in confidence.

As part of the final judging, every shortlisted project is likely to receive an independently conducted and anonymous visit. The assessor will experience the exhibition as an ordinary visitor and their observations will be considered by the Judges alongside the written submission and supporting material.

Designers and contractors may enter with the permission of their client. We recommend that the submission is made jointly and includes direct input from the museum or heritage organisation concerned.

⚠️IMPORTANT NOTES ⚠️

Outstanding Achievement in Visitor Accessibility

Ensuring that museums, galleries, heritage sites, and cultural attractions are fully accessible is not only an ethical and legal obligation; it also enhances our cultural landscape, allowing everyone to engage with and enjoy the experiences offered.

This important award aims to highlight exemplary initiatives undertaken by organisations to implement a comprehensive approach to visitor accessibility, which removes barriers and increases engagement for Disabled* people.

Your application must also illustrate how disabled people have shaped initiatives either through consultation, co-design or detailed feedback.

As with all categories, the size of your organisation will be considered in relation to the scope of the submitted work.

* Our language is informed by the social model of disability, which states that people are disabled by barriers in society rather than an individual medical condition or impairment, but we recognise that applicants may include different language in their applications.  By ‘Disabled people’ we refer to people with any form of impairment who are disabled by society and the multiple barriers they face, including people with a physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological, emotional, age-related or any other hidden impairment(s). We therefore include people with learning difficulties, d/Deaf people, Blind and visually impaired people, mental health system users and survivors, people living with chronic illness and Older people with age-related impairments.

Best Visitor Experience

Visitors make an active choice to spend their time with museums, galleries and heritage attractions. This award celebrates organisations that understand their visitors and have made demonstrable improvements to the quality of the experience they receive.

This category looks beyond the initial welcome to consider the whole visitor journey. Entries might include improvements to pre-visit information, booking and arrival, orientation and wayfinding, front-of-house service, visitor facilities, staff culture, interpretation of the site or the ways in which visitor feedback is gathered and acted upon.

Tell us what prompted the work, what you wanted to improve and how visitors helped to shape your approach. The judges will be looking for evidence that changes were based on a clear understanding of visitor needs rather than assumption.

Please demonstrate the difference the work has made. Evidence might include visitor feedback, satisfaction levels, VAQAS score, repeat visits, dwell time, complaints, recommendations, staff feedback or changes in audience profile.

Projects of any size or budget will be considered. The judges will assess achievement in relation to the organisation’s circumstances and available resources.

This global award celebrates imaginative and effective uses of digital technology by museums, galleries, heritage attractions and cultural organisations worldwide, including the UK.

The judges will be looking for creativity, usability and clear evidence that the digital offer has increased engagement, improved access, supported learning, generated income or reached audiences in new ways.

Please be clear about impact and evaluation. Avoid relying solely on headline reach or page-view figures: tell us what users did, what they gained and what the organisation learned.

NEW CATEGORY SPECIAL OFFER!

Best Collections and Collecting Project

This new award celebrates excellence, innovation and impact in the art and science of collecting, managing, documenting and providing access to collections and collections information.

It recognises the vital work that ensures collections remain relevant, responsibly stewarded, understood and accessible to different users and audiences.

Entries may relate to contemporary or community collecting, acquisitions, work addressing omissions within existing collections, inventories and audits, documentation, collections reviews or rationalisation, provenance research, ethical stewardship, restitution and repatriation, cataloguing, collections storage, digitisation for collections access or the sharing of collections knowledge.

This list is not exhaustive. The judges will be looking for projects that demonstrate:

  • Purpose and relevance – a clear rationale for the work and an understanding of how it strengthens the collection and its future use.
  • Inclusivity and access – enabling meaningful access to collections or collections information and embedding inclusive practice.
  • Accountability and stewardship – applying appropriate standards, improving data and documentation, and strengthening the long-term care and management of collections.
  • Innovation and problem-solving – using imaginative approaches, appropriate technology or resourceful solutions to overcome limitations of capacity, expertise or funding.
